How the calculators work

  1. Enter your income before or after tax. Gross income goes through our tested tax calculator for that country first.
  2. Choose a single or couple household, the type of home and how much you spend on eating out and leisure.
  3. Read your monthly and weekly budget. Every amount can be edited, so you can replace our defaults with your own rent or bills.

About the prices. Rents come from published market reports; transport fares from the operators; utilities and food from national budget institutes where available. Where no official figure exists we mark the amount as an estimate. All figures were last reviewed in October 2026.

Frequently asked questions

How much of my income should go on rent?

A common guideline is about 30% of gross income. In expensive cities such as Dublin, Amsterdam and Vancouver that is often not realistic, which is why each calculator shows your rent as a share of income.

Why does the calculator ask for gross or net income?

Rent and shopping are paid from your take-home pay. If you only know your salary before tax, we work out your take-home pay with the country’s tax rules. If you already know your net pay, choose Net.

Can I use my own figures?

Yes. Open Adjust expenses on any city page and type in your own monthly amounts.
