About salarycosts
salarycosts answers one question clearly: how much of my salary do I actually keep? Pick a country, enter a gross salary and see every tax and contribution between your employer’s payroll and your bank account.
What we cover
Nineteen countries across Europe, North America, the Pacific and Asia, with state, provincial, regional or municipal detail where it changes your tax: the 50 US states and DC, the Canadian provinces and territories, German states, Spanish regions, Danish and Swedish municipalities and more. You can enter pay per year, month, week, day or hour, add bonuses and overtime, work backwards from the take-home pay you want, and compare the same salary across regions and countries.
Where the numbers come from
Every calculator is built from the rules published by the tax authorities themselves: the IRS, the Canada Revenue Agency, HMRC, the Australian Taxation Office, Germany’s Federal Ministry of Finance, Skatteverket in Sweden and their counterparts elsewhere. Where possible we test our results against official worked examples and tables. When a simpler online calculator disagrees with the law, we follow the law and note the difference in our test suite.
How we keep it accurate
- Tax rates, thresholds and allowances are updated every tax year, and each calculator shows the year it applies to.
- Every calculator ships with automated tests covering brackets, caps and edge cases, and the full test suite runs before each release.
- Benchmark figures such as average pay and minimum wage show their source and year.
What we are not
We are not a tax adviser. Results are estimates for a typical employee; your payslip can differ because of your employer’s benefits, tax codes, other income, filing choices or rules we do not model. Use the figures for planning and comparison, and check anything important with your payroll department or a qualified adviser.
