How Much Tax You Pay as You Earn More

Two numbers describe your tax burden. The effective rate is the share of your whole salary that goes to tax and contributions. In Sweden it rises from 18.7% to 33.0% across the salaries in the table above. The marginal rate is the share of your next unit of income that is taxed, and it is what matters when you consider a raise, overtime or a bonus.

The marginal rate is lowest around kr 400,000, where 24% of each extra amount goes to tax, and highest around kr 800,000, where it reaches 52%. Between those points the rate is not always a smooth climb, because allowances, credits and caps on social contributions switch on and off at different incomes.

A practical example: a 10% raise on kr 500,000 adds kr 50,000 to your gross pay but kr 34,145 to your take-home pay a year, so 68% of the raise reaches your account. Use the calculator and enter a bonus or overtime to see the same effect for your own numbers.

Worked Example: kr 500,000 in Sweden

To see how the calculation works, here is a kr 500,000 salary for a single employee (calculated for Stockholm, the calculator’s default municipality). The average full-time wage is kr 546,171, so this is a typical figure. The result is kr 396,713 a year, kr 33,059 a month or about kr 190.73 an hour on a 40-hour week.

ItemPer yearShare of gross
Gross salarykr 500,000100%
Municipal Tax−kr 96,50519.3%
Church Tax−kr 5,5981.1%
Public Service Fee−kr 1,1840.2%
Take-home paykr 396,71379.3%

The largest deduction is Municipal Tax, at kr 96,505 or 19.3% of gross pay. Taken together, tax and contributions amount to 20.7% of the salary. Put another way, you work from 1 January until about 16 March each year just to cover them, and about 8 of every 40 hours you work. Credits, where they apply, show as a plus sign because they reduce the tax you owe.

kr 500,000 by Month, Week, Day and Hour

Job offers are quoted per year but bills arrive monthly, so it helps to see the same salary per period. The figures below divide the kr 500,000 example by 12 months, 26 two-week periods, 52 weeks, 260 working days and 2,080 working hours (a 40-hour week). Your own pay schedule, hours and holidays can differ, and you can change them under More Options in the calculator.

Does Where You Live in Sweden Matter?

Yes. On the same kr 500,000 salary, take-home pay runs from kr 380,352 in Dorotea to kr 401,910 in Österåker, a gap of kr 21,558 a year (kr 1,796 a month). The middle of the range is Götene at kr 386,928. The municipality you choose changes the regional or local taxes and contributions added to the national system, so use the municipality selector next to the salary box to see your own place. The section “Your Net Pay Across All Municipalitys” above compares every municipality for the exact salary you enter.

How Is Salary Calculated and Paid in Sweden?

Swedish employees are paid monthly. The employer withholds preliminary tax according to the Skatteverket tax tables, which depend on your municipality, and pays all social contributions itself on top of your gross salary, so no separate social security deduction appears on your payslip. Your final tax is settled in the spring after you file your declaration.

Select your municipality and tick the church box if you are a Church of Sweden member.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is there no social security line?

In Sweden the employer pays social contributions as an additional cost; the employee’s general pension fee is fully offset by a tax credit.

How do municipalities differ?

Total municipal and regional rates differ by almost seven percentage points between municipalities, which affects take-home pay.

Does the calculator include occupational pension?

No. It is paid by the employer in addition to your salary.

Is the church fee optional?

Yes, only members of the Church of Sweden pay it.

How much is kr 500,000 a year after tax in Sweden?

A single employee earning kr 500,000 takes home about kr 396,713 a year (kr 33,059 a month) after tax and social contributions, which is a tax rate of 20.7%. This is for Stockholm; other municipalitys differ.

What share of a raise do I keep in Sweden?

At kr 500,000 you keep about 68% of each extra amount you earn, because the marginal tax rate there is 32%. The share changes as you move through tax bands, so run the calculator with your new salary to be exact.
